Buxton Squash Club brought in the new year with the latest instalment of the Buxton Squash Handicap tournament.
Ian Steeples won the Golden Racket in the fiercely-contested event to round off the 2013 campaign.
To reach the final, Steeples knocked out Chris Large and Buxton’s current number one, Howard Pearson.
Howard’s handicap was a 1980s aluminium racket, donated by JS Sports in Chapel.
Steeples’ opponent in the final was Rick Walters, who was fortunate to get to that stage after a close escape in the first round.
He was one point away from losing against Andy Williamson, but he managed to claw his way back and eventually get through to the final.
Steeples’ handicap gave him a two-point lead against Walters in the final and the gap was never closed as Steeples ran out convincing winner by a 2-0 scoreline.
The wooden spoon went to Steve Armitt, who was making his event debut.
• Meanwhile, Buxton Squash Club are aiming to run two teams in the North West Counties Squash League in 2014.
Those interested in joining the club can leave their contact details with the reception at Fairfield Community Centre, Victoria Park Road.
