Sol and Elizabeth collect trophies at Buxton cross country event

Buxton AC’s annual Cross Country Championships ended recently and this year’s winners have been announced as Elizabeth Nocton and Sol Clark.

The championships comprised races from the North Staffordshire Cross Country League, together with county, regional and national cross country events.

Elizabeth and Sol topped the points tables and were awarded their trophies last weekend.

Last weekend also saw Buxton’s monthly Pavilion Gardens 5K, which attracted 88 runners of all ages and abilities.

The free event is now a well-established fixture in the local running calendar and is renowned for its friendly, welcoming atmosphere, which makes it ideal for both newcomers and seasoned athletes.

This month saw several new members of the Target 5K scheme successfully completing the distance.

Alasdair Campbell (Cambuslang Harriers) returned once more to win the race, completing the three-lap course in a new personal best time of 16 minutes and 22 seconds.

Trafford AC’s Chris Leigh (16.42) took second place and was first Veteran, while Phillip Warburton (17.43) was third.

Lauren McNeil, 16, (18.53) once again won the women’s race, with Kate Ledin (23.07) taking second place overall and first Female Veteran.

Liz Edwards (23.10) was third.

Buxton’s Elliot Meylan was first Junior, clocking 18.47.

Second Male Junior was Sebastian Betts (23.53), with Luke Guise (24.07) coming home third.

Meanwhile, Katy Ardern (24.11) and Katie Ivings (26.08) were second and third Female Juniors.

At the Greater Manchester Marathon, Sheila Bradley and Andrew Wearden completed the course in four hours and 10 minutes, with Sheila raising £500 for The Thomas Theyer Foundation.

In the 5K event of the Peak District Trail Running Spring Series, Sue Jeff recorded her second straight Vet 50 win, finishing eighth overall out of 25 women.

Meanwhile, at the Arley Hall 10K there was a PB of 47.50 for Simon Moorhouse.

The next Pavilion Gardens 5K will take place at 9am on Saturday, May 14.

Entries are open for The Lomas Distribution Buxton Half Marathon on Sunday, May 29.
