ENER-G League 2nd XI: East Midlands 2: Buxton 3, Sikh Union (Coventry) 2
BUXTON Hockey Club’s second team enjoyed a good win last Saturday against third-placed Sikh Union.
After leading 3-0 at half-time, Buxton suffered a massive psychological blow when the visitors pulled two goals back in the first three minutes of the second half, however the Bucks defended well and held their nerve.
Playing against ten men, Buxton didn’t score until midway through the first half, when winger J Meaton tapped in a loose ball following the goalkeeper tackling midfielder Griffin who had dribbled into the ‘D’.
Meaton got his second after a short corner was awarded. Heathcote’s shot was saved by the goalie, but the rebound fell to Meaton who fired the ball home.
Another winger got the third goal when a cross was made from the left; striker Drennan almost scored with a reverse shot, then Houghton came in from the right to score from close range.
The whole team played well, particularly the defence of Hambleton, M Lomas, Clayton, Robins and Rowlands, and thoroughly deserved their win, with keeper Thyer again making several crucial saves.
The midfield and forwards also created more chances than usual, and with only three matches left, the Bucks are hoping for some more victories to give them a top-three finish in the league.
