ENER-G Hockey League East Midlands 2
Buxton 2nd XI 6, Grantham 2nd XI 3
YOUNG Sam Longden grabbed a hat-trick as Buxton Seconds comfortably won their sixth league match.
In an extraordinary afternoon, both Buxton teams played at home and, with the first XI winning 12-0, a total of 21 goals were scored in the two league matches on Buxton Community School’s astroturf pitch.
Grantham actually scored in the second minute after the Bucks had given away a penalty corner, before striker Talbot nicked one back at a M Lomas short corner strike.
Soon after, Talbot crossed to Meaton who slapped in from close range. Then Sewell scored from near the penalty spot from a J Lomas assist.
The visitors pulled a goal back, which shouldn’t have counted as it was only touched outside the circle, but Longden got his first goal with a push following a goal-mouth scramble to put the home side into a 4-2 lead at half time.
The second half started quieter, though Longden livened up proceedings to score two more goals, the first being a strong hit from the edge of the ‘D’ via a Pathe cross, and the second beat the goalkeeper at the far post from an M Lomas pass to the near post.
Grantham pulled another goal back following a cruel deflection by a defender, though the final result was never in doubt.
