Buxton 2nd XI 3, Worksop 2nd XI 2
After spending Christmas and New Year in New Zealand, Buxton Hockey Club striker Sewell netted a hat-trick on his return to give the Buxton 2nd XI their fifth league win of the season and maintain fourth place in the league.
Bottom-of-the-table Worksop were no pushovers and the winning goal came in the last minute of play, when Sewell scored from the edge of the D, courtesy of passing movements by Heatcote and M Lomas.
The play was very even from the start, with both teams creating chances, but Worksop defended their circle well and, at the other end, Buxton goalkeeper Thyer was forced to make several high-class saves.
In the 29th minute, the deadlock was broken when the Bucks attacked down the left side with defender Drennan passing to J Meaton on the wing. The subsequent square cross found Sewell, who evaded several defenders by dummying and running into the D, before firing in a shot from 16 yards.
The next goal came soon after the interval when Buxton were awarded a short corner.
From a rehearsed routine, M Lomas hit just wide of the goal to Houghton whose deflection was saved by the goalie, only for Sewell to pounce and get his second from close range.
However, the visitors rallied and drew level with two goals in two minutes, one from a short corner and the other from a highly skilled reverse hit into the roof of the net.
A draw looked inevitable with no further goals for 22 minutes, both defences holding firm in end-to-end play, until Sewell used his remarkable skill to find the winner.
Young Houghton showed a lot of promise on the right wing and will be a player to watch out for from now on.
