Quartet of Buxton AC ladies impress as they secure top spot at relay event

Competing at the Derwent Valley Relays held at Belper recently, Buxton AC’s lady veteran team claimed first place in their category.

Each team consisted of four runners who completed an individual leg of 5K.

The Buxton AC team comprised of Julie Riley, Jane Jackson, Sarah Sewell and Gayle Johnson, and their cumulative time was one hour 33 minutes and 47 seconds.

The Club fielded an impressive five teams with the Senior Men claiming an impressive fourth-placed position.

That team consisted of Rob White, Jason Bennett, Ben Light and James Wells and the quartet posted a time of 1.12.22.

The event attracted a huge field of 76 teams, with Buxton AC performing commendably.

At the Tideswell fell race, a 4.4-mile race with near vertical climbs and descents, Rob White (28.22) was first home for Buxton in fourth.

Darran Hawkins (31.02) was eighth, Bryan McKenna (32.27) 15th and Jo Bednall was first female over-45 after a time of 35.53.

Jason Bennett took part in the popular Bakewell Pudding Race last weekend, taking 19th position.

The tough and testing Chrome Hill fell race out of Hollinsclough attracted several Buxton runners, and Darran Hawkins was first home for the club in 9th position.

The Hope Wakes Fell race was a Club Championship event, and many club members took part.

Rob White led the 18 members home in 10th position in 45.52.

The latest race in the Staffordshire Moorlands Summer Series was held at Macclesfield Forest last week – a race which is a true test of strength.

Kev Mottram was the first Buxton runner home in 34.57, followed by Liam Brown in 37.20, while Cris Milton (40.59) was the second-fastest female over-60.

• The annual Carnival Race will take place on Saturday (July 12) and will once again follow the new four-mile route.

Entries on the day will be from 12pm at the Halls of Residence behind the Railway Pub.
