SHEEN’S mens and ladies teams shrugged off Saturday’s wet weather to be crowned English national tug of war champions.

Teams from across England put on a fine display of strength, teamwork and sportsmanship as the National Outdoor Tug of War Championships came to Buxton Rugby Club.

Local interest in the event came from the Sheen mens and ladies teams, both clubs winning gold medals at the 2011 National Outdoor Tug of War Championships, held in Lincoln.

Sheen men secured the catchweight title early in the day after defeating Bosley, from near Macclesfield, in the final, and they later added the gold medal in the 700 kilos event after defeating Felton Eccles, from Somerset.

There was, however, disappointment for Sheen as they finished fourth in the 640 kilos event after being defeated by Two Dales, from near Matlock, in the bronze medal match, and then suffered a surprise exit in the group stages of the 680 kilos event.

Secretary and anchor man of Sheen mens team, Andrew Hall, said: “We were pleased with the performances, especially as we were competing on own turf and there was a lot of pressure on us to perform.

“Winning two national titles was a fantastic achievement, especially the new 700 category which we have never won before - we got the silver at Warslow two years ago.

“The conditions were challenging, but at the end of the day it was the same for all the teams. The ground was very good, considering there was so much rain.”

Sheen Ladies also got their day off to a winning start by winning the Ladies 540 kilos event after defeating rivals Bedford Ladies in the final.

Bedford, however, turned the tables in the 500 kilos event by taking gold from Sheen, which is the first time in two years that Sheen Ladies have lost to Bedford Ladies at a championship event.

Despite this disappointment, Rachel Craft, Sheen Ladies club secretary, said: “We were really pleased to win the 540 kilos event.”

Norton from Stoke-on-Trent (Staffordshire) were the dominant team on the day, winning four gold medals at 580 kilos, 600 kilos, 640 kilos and 680 kilos. The Gloucester and Somerset ACF team won the junior weight class.

Both Sheen men and ladies teams have now qualified to represent England at both the UK Championships in Wales in August, and the World Championships in Switzerland in September.

But there is a doubt over whether the teams will be able to finance a trip to the World Championships – they estimate it will cost each team-member around £1,000 to compete.
