BUXTON Amateur Boxing Club fighter Jon Pickering started the New Year in style with a good win in a tough bout at Moss Side in Manchester.
Pickering demonstrated dedication after receiving a late call-up to box following the Christmas period by stripping weight to make the scales for the clash.
After successfully passing the weigh-in, Pickering started the bout quickly. This controlled pressure worked well and, during the first round, Pickering looked to build on his good start.
The Moss Side boxer fought well and continued to look dangerous through a close first and second round, with Pickering boxing well, incorporating both reach advantage and sharpness to take the edge.
A third round drop-off in the Buxton fighter’s efforts would have endangered his chances of picking up the victory, but Pickering succeeded in delivering a big final session, pressing and pushing the pace to produce the win.
Elsewhere, Giann Magno expected to box off for the Derbyshire Schoolboy Championship in Chesterfield the following day.
However, following his hard work to achieve the 46kg weight category, Magno was awarded the title on the scales, and passed through to the next round with his nearest opponent slipping in to the weight category below.
