A new athletics club based in Buxton is enjoying a successful start to life as part of the local community.
High Peak Athletic Club was formed in March and is a predominantly junior-based club that offers specialised coaching for running enthusiasts.
The club offers coaching for youngsters aged eight and over, and goes through up to senior level, and has recently secured affiliation with England Athletics.
Among the club’s coaching staff is a former East Midlands Coach of the Year, while there are also a number of ex-international runners with many years of competition experience.
Two of the club’s coaching staff regularly train children in school curriculum time and during after-school clubs.
Such has been the success of the club that they are entering teams into the North Staffs Cross Country League, which starts later this month.
The club also has plans to enter the Derbyshire Cross Country Championships, which take place in January 2015.
The club has also made its presence known within the local community and already has a number of sponsors.
Jaime Stafford, from Fibracon in Whaley Bridge, said the creation of the club was a welcome boost for children in the High Peak.
He said: “It’s fantastic to support a local children’s athletics club.
“In a day and age where obesity is growing more common, it’s great to see these kids keeping active and having fun.
“Top marks to all the organisers as well who give their time and effort with the kids in mind.”
The club meets on Saturdays throughout the year, and is based at Buxton Community School’s sports hall.
Sessions run from 9-10am.
