CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH amateur boxer Jack Massey is to fly the flag for England at the forthcoming Youth Commonwealth Games.

Light heavyweight Massey, who boxes out of Northside Gym in Manchester in addition to training most weekends with the England squad, will fly out to the Isle of Man next month to compete in the prestigious event, which is a small-scale version of the Commonwealth Games.

Boxing at the Royal Hall in the Villa Marina, Massey will face boxers from different countries around the Commonwealth.

And the 18-year-old has already set his sights on bringing home a gold medal.

“I want the gold medal. I’m hungry for it,” declared Massey.

“I’m really looking forward to taking part. It is a massive opportunity for me and will hopefully open up a lot of doors.”

Massey’s coach Joe Pennington added: “The commitment that Jack puts into training has now started to pay off.

“He is now starting to get noticed by the relevant people, even through the close season.

This should now be the stepping stone for greater things.”
