Martin wins a five-set thriller as New Mills crash to heavy defeat to Marple

Missing key players Jean Boston and Denise Wales, New Mills women’s squash team were under pressure from the start during their home match against Marple on February 18.

There was a welcome return to the team for Cath Denny after an 18-month layoff due to injury. Having not lost any of her stylish play, it was only a lack of match fitness that let her down as she lost her match 3-0.

Di Howe also failed to make any impression, losing by a similar scoreline.

Linda Done moved up to the number one slot and put up a strong defence as she lost 3-0, although the scoreline didn’t show how long and closely-fought her games were.

Joss Garvey took one game off her opponent as she lost 3-1. It was left to Alison Martin to save some credibility, winning a long five-set game 3-2.

Overall, a disappointing points total of 18-4 was the result.

New Mills next face leaders Bollington in the penultimate game of the season.
