Buxton swimmer Abbie Wood has been shortlisted for a prestigous European Olympic Committee award.

Abbie, a member of Buxton Swimming Club and Derventio Excel Swim Squad, is shortlisted for the Piotr Nurowski Best Young European Athlete for 2013.

Her nomination comes after a hugely impressive showing at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Holland earlier this year.

Abbie, 14, claimed four medals during the tournament including golds in the 400m individual medley and 200m breaststroke.

She also collected two silver medals in the 200m individual medley and the 4x100m medley relay.

Abbie was also given the honour of being Team GB’s flagbearer during the closing ceremony of the festival, saying at the time: “To carry the flag at the ceremony was amazing.

“I was so proud and honoured to be chosen.”

The Buxton Community School pupil is up against four competitors in the EOC shortlist, with Tennis and Ski jumping also represented.

The ceremony will be held in the plush surroundings of Rome on November 22, as part of the EOC’s general assembly.

Abbie is also celebrating being shortlisted for a Derbyshire Sports 2013 award.

The youngster is up against Grace King of Amber Valley in the Junior Sportswoman of the Year category.

The Derbyshire Sports Awards will be held the week before the EOC ceremony, on Thursday, November 14.
