HOPE Valley’s Maddie Thompson and her ParalympicsGB team-mates are to face Beijing silver medallists Germany in the quarter-finals of the women’s wheelchair basketball tournament at London 2012.

It follows this afternoon’s (Monday) 67-50 defeat to three-time Paralympic champions Canada at the North Greenwich Arena, GB’s third defeat of the Games which leaves them fourth in their group.

Despite the defeat, coach Garry Peel said the team was looking forward to the knock-out stages with optimism.

“We were frightened and tense in the first couple of games which surprised me, but we performed much better since and now we are into the tournament the girls are much more relaxed,” he said.

“We are a young, inexperienced team, learning as we go through the tournament. Nobody wants to play GB in the crossover stage as they know we can perform and produce when we want too.”

Maddie, 17, from Hope, has played a part in all four group matches for ParalympicsGB, and will be expected to line-up against Germany tomorrow (Tuesday).
