HOPES of a Paralympic medal for Hope Valley’s Maddie Thompson and her ParalympicsGB team-mates ended with defeat to Germany on Tuesday night.

Despite a battling performance by Great Britain, Beijing silver medallists Germany won the match 55-44 at London’s North Greenwich Arena.

Maddie, 17, from Hope, didn’t play in the quarter-final match, but has featured for ParalympicsGB in all four of their group matches, including their only win of the tournament against Brazil.

Britain now play China on Thursday in their crossover classification match, still aiming to improve on their eighth place in Beijing. After finishing sixth at the 2010 World Championships, they will now aim for fifth with growing confidence.

Coach Gary Peel said: “It’s not gone as well as we wanted because we haven’t performed as well as we wanted, but we’re getting better as it goes on and we’re really going to fight for that fifth spot.”

Making her Paralympic debut at the London games, Maddie is the youngest member of the ParalympicsGB women’s wheelchair basketball team.
