VETERAN Buxton hockey player Peter Danson has helped England’s over-70s team to a silver medal at the Grand Masters World Cup in Oxford.
Danson, 72, was a member of the national team which narrowly lost out to Australia in the final of the prestigious competition, held for the first time on UK soil.
The midfield player bagged two goals as England chalked up group stage wins over Japan (11-0), South Africa (9-0) and Germany (2-0) and draws against the Netherlands (1-1) and Australia (1-1), before narrowly losing to the latter in the final.
Despite the disappointment of losing the world title they had won in Capetown four years previously, Danson said: “It was a really good competition, and we will now look towards defending our European title in Belgium next year.”
Danson is Buxton Hockey Club’s 2nd XI captain and club secretary.
