ENER-G Hockey League: Buxton II 2, Wellingborough II 5
BUXTON Hockey Club’s second team gave a good account of themselves, on the thawed-out astro against top-of-the-table Wellingborough, but were not quite good enough to get the result that they wanted.
Wellingborough scored in the first few minutes, before the home team could settle, although it didn’t take too long for the Bucks to draw level.
Following play down the left, Longden scored a well-taken goal, assisted by a great pass from Meaton.
Unfortunately, two mistakes resulted in the visitors leading 3-1 at half-time, and the Bucks failed to add to their score by not capitalising on some half-chances.
Buxton continued to play some really good hockey with Kitchin and Houghton making darting runs on the wings, but Wellingborough added two more goals, one from a short corner and one from open play.
There was a strong fight-back in the last five minutes, when striker Longden got a second goal, though the result was beyond doubt at that stage, with the Bucks having conceded too many goals.
Buxton: S Thyer, D Robins, A Matthews, J Lomas, M Lomas, J Clayton, T Griffin, D Pathe, P Heathcote, P Danson, S Meaton, J Kitchin, W Houghton, A Drennan, S Longden, A Talbot.
