A BUXTON swimmer has struck gold for England in London’s Olympic arena.
Buxton Swimming Club’s Abbie Wood picked up the top gong during her second visit to the Olympic Aquatic Centre last week, after being selected to compete in the Sainsbury’s School Games 2012.
Abbie was picked back in February to swim for England in the multi-sport event, in which thousands of school-aged athletes competed for the home nations of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
The Buxton Community School pupil took gold in the girls’ 200m breaststroke in a new personal best time of 2:36:30. In a field including competitors two years her senior, Abbie commanded the race well and timed her finish perfectly, taking the lead in the final 15 metres.
She also competed in the 100m freestyle, not one of her usual events, but she stepped up to the mark swimming almost a three-second personal best to achieve a National Qualifying time, her first in this event.
The School Games was the final test event to take place at the Aquatic Centre before final preparations get underway for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Abbie is coached by Dave Peet and Mike Glossop at Buxton Swimming Club, and Kim Hill at Derventio Excel Swim Squad.
