AFTER two failed weigh-ins within a week, it was third time lucky for Buxton ABC’s junior featherweight Jordan Bennett (pictured above), who made a trip to St Paul’s Boxing Academy in Hull for his first bout.
After an even opening round, Bennett was instructed to up his workrate, double his shots and move to the body. The boxer worked to his key strengths and backed his tough opponent up, banging shots into the body and hooking to the head, as he began to boss the fight.
Going into the third round, Bennett was always looking to shift to the body and, while both lads landed heavy shots, the Buxton boxers were the more eye catching and he went on to win on a unanimous decision.
Jon Pickering entered the East Midlands CYP final against division boss C Lee of the Kettering School of Boxing, in Hinckly. Pickering was the better in the first half of the contest, working with a razor sharp jab and keeping the powerful Lee away, but the Kettering boxer showed his class in the later stages to take the contest on points.
