Buxton-based Dean Winstanley earned praise from Michael van Gerwen after the Dutch ace beat him on the way to lifting last weekend’s World Grand Prix.

van Gerwen overcame Winstanley 3-1 in the second round match, with the clash between the two hard-fought, with Winstanley registering three 180s to van Gerwen’s four.

van Gerwen eventually went on to defeat James Wade 5-3 in Sunday’s final in Dublin.

Despite the defeat at the last-16 stage for Winstanley, he gave a good account of himself as he continues preparations towards the PDC World Championships in December.

The 33-year-old, married to Lorraine Farlam, will now turn his attentions to next month’s Grand Slam of Darts - a competition that he reached the semi-final of in 2012.
