Five Hope Valley College students competed in the British Youth Fencing Championships in Sheffield last weekend.

Year seven students Ellen Robbins-Wilkinson and Alice Bannister and Year 11 trio Molly Archer, William Marsden and Becky Banks all competed in the sabre section at the finals.

Ellen and Alice secured fifth and tenth-placed finishes respectively in the Under 12 Girls competition.

Elsewhere, Molly came 17th in the Under-16 Girls, Becky finished 19th in the Under-18 Girls competition and William recorded a 38th-placed finish in the Under-12 Boys competition.

Rob Moxon, head of PE at Hope Valley College, says the school is proud of the quintet’s achievements in Sheffield.

He said: “We were delighted that five of our students competed at a national final and held their own against some of the best fencers in the country.”

Fencing has grown in popularity at the college after it launched an extra-curricular club in 2013, having secured funding for expert coaches.
