Buxton 1st XI 2

Ashby 1st XI 0

BUXTON, without two first-team regulars, had to work hard for this win.

The hosts started well, with Will Mather slapping a shot from the top of the D and rattling the top of the post via a deflection.

Wayne Orritt opened the scoring when he received a lovely weighted pass from Mather and beat a defender before slotting home under the Ashby keeper.

Buxton’s keeper Dave Balderstone was then called into action with a couple of fine saves.

After the break, brothers Jake and Sam Meaton displayed great dribbling skills and vision, with Jake and Paul Browett causing countless problems for the opposition defence.

The best move put Orritt one-on-one with the keeper, who got his pads to the shot.

Then Dan Lowton played a fantastic pass for Sam to run onto, rounding the left back before picking out Orritt to shoot wide, but Jake pounced to score his second in two games.

After that, Buxton had some defending to do, with Balderstone saving a ball that had already passed him and Sam Lomas and Jim Stewart making some last-ditch tackling, Paddy Jones clearing the line nicely and Dan Bedworth having the upper hand on Ashby’s left winger.

Buxton: D Balderstone (GK), P Jones, J Stewart, S Lomas, D Bedworth, J Meaton, W Mather (C), D Lowton, S Meaton, W Orritt, P Browett. Man of the Match: J Meaton.

Buxton travel to top of the league Nuneaton on Saturday (departing at 10.30am), before playing their final game of the season at home to bottom of the league Grantham on Sunday (meet at 10am).

Ashby 2nd XI 4

Buxton 2nd XI 1

BUXTON started the game well, with Saunders making several fast runs down the right wing despite being fouled by the opposition. Decisions started to do against Buxton, although Ashby didn’t score until the 25th minute from a short corner.

Early in the second half, J Lomas was yellow carded for dissent against one of the umpires and, in that critical ten-minute period Ashby added three more goals.

Restored to 11 players, Buxton pulled one back when M Lomas slapped in from a Saunders cross, but by then the result of the match was already decided.

Buxton: S Thyer, D Robins, M Lomas, J Clayton, T Griffin, M Hambleton, L Saunders, P Danson, J Lomas, P Heathcote, A Drennan, Alan Talbot.

On Saturday, Buxton 2nds host Rolls Royce 2nd XI (2pm).
