Buxton Hockey Clubs’ Back to Hockey initiative, which aims to encourage women and girls aged 11 upwards to return to playing hockey, ended in a friendly match against Matlock Baileans.
For the past eight weeks the club has run sessions for all abilities from new players, returning players and those who haven’t picked up a stick for more than 25 years.
There were record numbers of participants with what is believed to be the largest attendance figures for any session held within the Midlands region.
Buxton were able to field 20 very keen players who, despite a 3-1 defeat, played extremely well and took the lead early in the match.
But inexperience showed as Matlock rallied and increased the pressure, scoring three goals to secure the match.
This is a great start for a developing part of the club which hopes to form a team and play in the Derbyshire League next season.
