Buxton Hitmen to welcome the Islanders as season draws to a close

BUXTON Hitmen conclude their 2012 season this weekend against the Isle of Wight Islanders.

The National Trophy meeting will take place at High Edge on Sunday, starting at 3pm.

In other news, ex-Buxton Hitmen rider Craig Cook has won the Premier League Riders’ Championship.

Cook currently rides as number one for Edinburgh Monarchs in the Premier League, along with Belle Vue in the Elite League, however he has endured a difficult season and sustained a broken wrist which kept him out of the British Grand Prix and the first staging of this event during the summer.

Speaking after the re-staged event at Sheffield last Sunday, Cook said: “I don’t know how I stayed calm during the time it took to run the final. It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I guess it will soon.”

Cook started his speedway career at High Edge and was part of the Hitmen’s 2010 triple-winning team.

He also won the National League Riders Championship in 2009 while riding for the Derbyshire club.
