Buxton Hockey Club start the new campaign on Saturday in the East Midlands Premier Division, after a shake-up by league administrators.

Last season saw the club’s first team compete in East Midlands 1 Division, although their new league is still the fourth tier of the regional game after a revamp of the system in the summer.

The club will be competing a 12-team league, as opposed to 10 from 2013/14, although most of the teams they played last year remain in the same league.

Their opening game is this Saturday, with a tough looking trip to Nottingham.

Last season Buxton finished seventh and Nottingham were third.

The firsts’ final pre-season game saw them overcome Ashbourne 5-1 last weekend.

They trailed 1-0 going into the break but had a barnstorming second half.

Strikes from Orritt (2), Thompson, Wilton and Sherlock did the damage as Buxton built confidence to head into the season’s curtain-raiser.

Elsewhere, the seconds went down 6-1 against Derwent.

Buxton thirds were held to a 2-2 draw against Keele University.
