ENER-G Hockey League: Buxton Hockey Club 1st XI 2, Market Harborough 1

BUXTON finished the season on a high, coming from behind to beat the league champions.

The visitors had lost only twice all season, while Buxton were also playing well of late, losing just once since Christmas.

The opening exchanges were played equally in each half, both sides sharing possession but creating few chances.

Slowly the visitors got a foothold in the game, pegging Buxton back inside their own half, but the defence of Bedworth, Mather, Stewart, Lomas and Jones held firm, shielding Balderstone in goals.

The constant pressure started to take its toll and errors started to appear in Buxton’s game. One in particular, off Bedworth, proved costly as he only half-cleared a cross into the “D” and M Chiu volleyed home from close range.

The home side came out fighting after the interval, chasing the ball down and intercepting quite a few loose passes. Lowton and Wilton, starved off the ball in the first period, started to have more of a say in the game.

Buxton were managing to get the ball out into wider positions in the second half, utilising the pace of wingers L Saunders and D Pathe and creating a few more chances as the game wore on.

The equaliser arrived midway through the second half. Bedworth strode unchallenged down the right flank and fired in a dangerous ball into the “D”. Curzon escaped his marker and steered it past the keeper.

Buxton sensed a win was on the cards and piled forwards. Orritt and Browett were proving a handful up front and their trickery forced the visitors into conceding a short corner. Wilton grabbed the winner from the short, poking home from close range after Browett’s shot was saved.

Harborough rallied late on and in the final minutes were awarded a short corner, but Buxton defended manfully.

Buxton: D Balderstone (GK), J Stewart, D Bedworth, W Mather (C), S Lomas, P Jones, L Saunders, D Pathe, D Lowton, J E Wilton, M Curzon, W Orritt, P Browett. Man of the Match: W Mather.
