BUXTON Amateur Boxing Club fighter Jon Pickering concluded his season in style by successfully stepping up in weight to secure the Derbyshire light middleweight title.

Pickering, whose normal fighting weight is 66kg, gave away considerable age and weight advantage to challenge for the vacant 71kg Derbyshire belt.

His opponent over three rounds at the Spire Boxing Academy show at Queens Park Sports Centre on Sunday was home favourite Nathan ‘Whirlwind’ Whitehead.

Aware of Whitehead’s dangerous jab, Pickering made a cautious start but, after avoiding the initial onslaught, had the better of the first session.

Pickering was charged to increase his work rate in the second round and force his one-two combinations, which continued to land with regularity.

It was now Pickering’s bout to lose as the Buxton fighter continued to dominate into round three, his strength, fitness and ability shining through as he won the bout by a large margin on a unanimous decision.

On the undercard, Buxton’s junior star Giann Magno faced a re-match against a high-calibre opponent from Runcorn who had previously reached the schoolboy finals.

Having won their first encounter, Magno was made to work from the off as Dunek sought revenge, pushing forward with aggression and forcing the pace.

Magno dealt extremely well with a good and fit pressure fighter who boxed an excellent contest, and the Buxton fighter showed a level of maturity and skill which reflected his boxing talent.

He read the contest well, employing excellent footwork, and with Dunek tiring in the final round Magno increased his scoring to secure a terrific win.
