TUG OF war teams from across England will descend on Buxton this weekend to compete in the Tug of War Association’s national outdoor tug of war championships.
Buxton Rugby Club, in Harpur Hill, is hosting Saturday’s event, which will see men’s, ladies and junior teams competing in various weight classes as they bid to be declared the nations’ strongest tug of war teams.
Among the local teams competing will be the Sheen Men and Sheen Ladies squads, who both go into the event having won gold at the 2011 national outdoor tug of war championships.
“We are looking forward to a great day of competition,” explained Alan Knott, spokesman for event organisers the Tug of War Association.
“The winning teams from this event will go on to represent England at the UK Championships in August, and then the World Championships in Switzerland in September, so there is a lot at stake.”
The event is being organised in conjunction with Buxton Rugby Club and Sheen Tug of War Club, with around 500 competitors taking part.
It is also expected to attract a large number of supporters on the day.
“Tug of war is a true traditional team sport that used to be part of the Olympic Games, and it is a great spectacle to see teams battling it out in a competitive arena,” added Alan.
“The local public is encouraged to come along and support the teams at this competitive event and learn more about our sport. They will not be disappointed.”
The competitions commence at 10am on Saturday June 16 and run throughout the day.
Entry is free and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
