BURBAGE Crown Green Bowling Club has been crowned Derbyshire County Cup winners for a sixth time.

Twenty-nine teams from across the county started out in the competition, which concluded with a finals day at Bolsover Colliery in Chesterfield.

With seven winners in the semi-final, Burbage overcame Netherseal by a comfortable 41 chalks to set-up a clash against Swadlincote Catholics, who were narrow victors over Alvaston & Boulton.

Burbage got off to a strong start in the final and led by 15 shots after the first four games.

Their middle four continued the good run, gaining a further 14-shot advantage to lead by 29, with only two games to play.

Swadlincote’s final two players made for a nervous finale as they raced into 13-6 and 14-3 leads respectively, but Burbage dug deep to record a 21-shot victory overall, by 194 points to 173.

This secured the club their sixth County Cup win since the event began back in 1927, and also qualifies them for the World Team Championships at Irlam Steel next year.
