ENER-G Midlands Hockey League East Midlands 2: Newark 1st XI 1, Buxton 1st XI 2
BUXTON began their ENER-G league season with a hard-fought win at newly-relegated Newark.
Wilton broke the deadlock when he dribbled past two players and preformed a fantastic one-two with Orritt before flicking the ball into the inner side netting.
Thyer made three consecutive saves during a goalmouth scramble, but the attacks were well cleared by Lomas and Bedworth.
Buxton started the second half strongly, with tireless running on the right wing from last season’s player of the year Saunders. The youngest Meaton brother displayed his skills, while Griffin made injecting runs and some strong tackles.
Buxton doubled their advantage when Wilton passed square to Mather, who injected the ball into the circle for Pathe. He in turn found Orritt, who slid the ball through the keeper’s legs.
Newark threw everything at Buxton, who countered with Jones’ long-range aerial passes to Browett.
The hosts eventually scored with a training ground move from a short corner, and Buxton had to soak up some late pressure to claim a well-fought three points.
