Battling Buxton can’t halt Hornets

Buxton Ladies Hockey Club’s developing seconds were well beaten 12-0 at home by recently relegated Amber Valley Hornets this week.

Hornets’ well-organised squad that pushed hard from the outset, earning them an early goal.

Buxton battled tirelessly against a full on onslaught with Eleanor Shaw working hard to head off the attack and the defence of Julie Shaw, Ellie Higgins-Brown and Victoria Allen fought with determination to keep them at bay.

Ellie Higgins-Brown was particularly fearless during one short corner where she took on a player twice her size but was felled by a shot hitting her arm and then her ear forcing her retirement from the match.

Despite keeper Sarah Catlin saving many shots on goal, the score at half-time was 9-0 to the visitors.

As is now becoming their trademark, Buxton played much better in the second half.

Elizabeth Fisher and Kate Jackson worked the midfield, linking with Lauryn Higgins-Brown and Rebecca Perring to move play up the wings.

With Sarah Ingleby and Kate Higgins-Brown finding space, they were able to get the ball into the D for a tussle around goal which went unrewarded. Still the Hornets kept coming back, their interception of the ball gaining them many advantages.

However they met a more organised Buxton defence and Emma Thurlby and Karen Jones added the power needed to clear the ball safely on many occasions.

Unfortunately with that level of attack it was inevitable that more goals would come and the score ended 12-0 to the Hornets.
