A BUXTON youngster is set to compete alongside some of the world’s best swimmers at next month’s Olympic trials.

Abbie Wood, Buxton Swimming Club’s 200-metre breaststroke National Age Group champion, will represent the club at The British Gas Swimming Championships on March 3, which will be the first to be held in the new Olympic pool in London.

The Buxton Community School pupil will be swimming alongside the country’s best swimmers including Olympic and world champions Becky Addlington and Liam Tancock, as well as competitors from all over the world.

The event, which will be used to select the team to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics, will be broadcast by the BBC and Radio 5 live.

Abbie, who turns 13 on the day of the competition and will be one of the youngest competitors, will be swimming in four events — the 100 metre and 200 metre breaststroke, and the 200 metre and 400 metre individual medley.

A spokesperson for Buxton Swimming Club said: “Everyone is very proud of her achievements and send their best wishes.”

Abbie has also been selected to swim for Central England in the UK school games, to be held at the Olympic pool in May.

She is coached at Buxton Swimming Club by Dave Peet and Michael Glossop, and at Derventio Excel (Derbyshire swimming’s elite squad) by Kim Hill and Andi Manley.
