Strong performances at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Holland saw Buxton’s Abbie Wood break the 2mins, 30secs barrier in the 200m breaststroke.

The 15-year-old posted a PB time of 2.29.38 to join a select band of British swimmers who have achieved this milestone.

Despite setting this terrific time, Abbie narrowly missed out on the Bronze medal by just 0.6 of a second, coming home in fifth place in the 15/16-year-old final.

Abbie also competed in the 400m individual medley during the five-day tournament in Dordrecht.

However, despite a strong heat swim and finishing as fourth-fastest qualifier, she was deprived of a place in the final due to the ruling that only two swimmers from each country can progress to the finals.

GB had a strong contingent in this event with three Brits in the top four places, and they were rewarded with a silver and bronze.

Tim Jones, Head of Performance for GB Swimming, said the week was full of positives: “We were keen to stress to all of the swimmers and coaches involved that this meet was just one part of a much longer journey towards senior medal success.”
