Longnor set for another action-packed day of heritage racing

The history of Longnor Races stretches back more than 100 years, but has always moved with the times.

Event coordinator Heidi Bradbury, 38, said: “It originally started as a few farmers having a race around the village in their horse-drawn carts, and its just grown and grown ever since.”

The 2016 event, on Thursday, September 8, will see a junior pony gymkhana at 11.30am, followed by adult harness races from 1.45pm.

The early rounds will sort through the competition, leading up to an adrenaline-fuelled final with £2,300 going to the winner.

Heidi added: “We’re praying for sunshine, it makes such a beautiful sight as the horses power around the track.”

If you prefer your sports with even more horsepower, from 3.30pm there will be a series of motorcycle races.

For less breakneck speeds, at 6.30pm runners young and old will head out on a five-mile fell race. In total,there will be £3,500 up for grabs on the day, along with silver cups in several prize categories.

Spectators can relax and enjoy the sound of Hollinsclough Silver Band playing throughout the day, and enjoy hot food and drinks from the licenced bar—with a bouncy castle and plenty of entertainment for younger visitors too.
