BUXTON boxer Jon Pickering has been crowned Clubs for Young People (CYP) Midlands Champion.
Pickering made a 220-mile round trip to Kettering to face Nottingham boxer Connor Sery in the semi-final of the regional competition.
With over 80 bouts to their name, this was a hotly-contested meeting between two talented boxers who were facing each other for the fourth time in 12 months.
Sery began with speed and aggression, with two or three viscous scoring shots stunning Pickering into action and forcing him to work with typical vigour and sharpness.
Pickering soon started to land with commanding straight shots, and the Buxton boxer was awarded a unanimous points decision.
As East Midlands champion, Pickering contested the Midlands final against his West Midlands counterpart from Lions ABC.
The rounds were close and Pickering was urged to continue to push on with workrate and movement against his tough, well-schooled opponent.
Pickering was eventually awarded the majority decision, and will now progress to the national quarter-finals in Portsmouth.
