Honours for sports stars

HIGH PEAK sports stars have been honoured for their achievements at a special awards ceremony.

The event, held last week at High Peak Borough Council's offices in Chinley, celebrated the success of sports champions and volunteers from across the borough.

Winners, who were presented with their awards from High Peak Borough Councillor Andrew Bingham, were selected from nominations made to a sports selection panel.

Councillor Bingham said: "These awards confirm that we have a diverse wealth of sporting talent in the High Peak.

"On behalf of the council, I congratulate all of the award-winners and wish them luck in the county and national stages."

Members of Glossop Judo Club scooped a hat trick of awards, taking the Club of the Year, Performance Coach of the Year which went to Steven Philips, while ten-year-old Eric Ham – the youngest individual achiever – won the Junior Sportsman of the Year accolade.

Fifteen-year-old Alan Bamber, from Glossop Amateur Swimming Club, took home the Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award, while Tim Dobson, 16, of Glossop Sailing Club, won the Young Sports Leader title.

Glossopdale Devils under tens hockey team took the awards for Team of the Year and Junior team of the year.

Melanie Greenwood, St Philip Howard's head of PE, won the contribution to School sport accolade while Sue Danson from Derbyshire Netball Club won the Service to Sport award.

Paralympic cyclist, Anthony Kappes scooped both the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award and the Sportsperson of the Year award, while 17 year-old Hannah Shaw from the Nottingham Wildcats won the Junior Sportswoman of the Year category for basketball.

County and national runner, Andy Wilton from Staffordshire Moorlands AC, was named Veteran Sportsperson of the Year while the Football Association's Coach of the Year, Jan Melland – from Buxton Girls' Football Club – won the High Peak Community Coach of the Year award.
