THREE members of the same family have picked up gold medals at the WKC British Kickboxing Championships.

Rick Allsop, sister Sharon Allsop and niece Danielle Allsop, all from New Mills, secured national titles at the competition, held at Carnal Leisure Centre in Urmston, Manchester.

An instructor at North West Chinese Kickboxing clubs in Buxton and Glossop, Rick, 41, won gold in the -85 kilos class. Sharon won her medal in the -55 kilos class, and Danielle in the -50 juniors class.

Rick said: “The results were fantastic. Personally, that was probably the best I have ever fought before.”

The success at national level means all three again qualify to represent the British team at the WKC World Kickboxing Championships in Montreal, Canada, in October, when Rick and Sharon will be aiming to defend the world titles they won in 2011, while Danielle will be hoping to go one better after narrowly missing out on gold last year.

In order to compete at the World Championships, each fighter must raise £1,000 to cover travel and accommodation costs, and the trio are appealing to local businesses to help fund their world title bids.

“Because it’s not an Olympic sport, it is very difficult to obtain funding, but we are all keen to go after our success last year,” added Rick.
