Cheshire League Division One

Knutsford 3, Whaley Bridge 2

Whaley Bridge rose to the challenge of playing Cheshire League Division One champions Knutsford and were unlucky to come away empty handed.

The visitors took the game to Knutsford, thanks to the midfield presence of Craig Fleury and Damien Morrison, and on 15 minutes Morrison’s back-post header was well saved by the Knutsford keeper.

Whaley should have taken the lead on 25 minutes when George Burgess was through with only the keeper to beat but he hesitated and his shot was blocked.

Against the run of play, Knutsford took the lead on the half-hour after Whaley failed to clear a free-kick but, just before half-time, they were prevented from extending their lead when James Tattersall saved superbly with his legs.

Although playing the better football, Whaley went further behind from a free-kick five minutes into the second half.

Whaley’s efforts were eventually rewarded when Bill Sutton’s corner was nodded in by Ric Forder with 15 minutes to go.

In spite of this boost, Whaley conceded again only two minutes later and faced an uphill struggle to rescue a point.

With a minute to go, Mick Ryan scored the goal of the game with a fierce drive from 25 yards but it was too little too late.

Colin Moss had an impressive debut for Whaley, but Mick Ryan was named man of the match.
