Cheshire League Division Two: Barnton 0, Whaley Bridge 4
WHALEY Bridge returned to winning ways with a convincing win over Barnton.
The visitors took control from the start and went ahead on four minutes from a Bill Sutton free-kick.
Rick Forder and Geo Langford buzzed in midfield, and Jack Gregory made two impressive runs only to be denied at the edge of the area.
Although dominant, it took Whaley another 26 minutes to increase their lead thanks to a deflected, headed own goal making it 2-0 at the break.
The second half followed the same pattern as Barnton created few chances with Whaley’s midfield in full control. Matt Brown and Charlie Watts attacked down the flanks and caused Barnton problems throughout the game.
On 79 minutes, Whaley made the game safe when substitute Ray Dwolitka ran through the Barnton defence and lashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Shortly after, Jack Gregory forced a point-blank save from the Barnton keeper and then, on 82 minutes, Mike Ward lofted the ball into the penalty area and Dwolitka was pulled down. For the first time this season, Sutton did not convert his spot kick as it rattled the upright.
At the other end, James Tattersall made a terrific last-ditch save to ensure Whaley kept another clean sheet.
There was still time for Jack Gregory to fire in a right-foot shot from outside the penalty area to give him the goal he richly deserved, and Mike Ward hit the crossbar.
Whaley’s back three of Chris Wood, Scott Dignan and Rob Newton were solid but, for the second week running, Jack Gregory was Whaley’s man of the match.
