DCFA Senior Challenge Cup Preliminary Round

Whaley Bridge 3, Belper United 0

PLAYING their first ever match in the Derbyshire Senior Cup, Whaley Bridge overcame Belper United in a tighter game than the scoreline suggests.

Whaley had the better of a goalless first half but Lee Morris and George Burgess were denied by Belper’s keeper. Belper defended in numbers and Whaley’s long ball tactic was ineffective.

Only five minutes into the second half, Whaley went ahead when Geo Langford’s powerful cross-shot was side-footed home by Morris.

On 67 minutes, James Tattersall kept Whaley ahead with a superb one-handed save, deflecting the ball onto the crossbar.

The introduction of Matt Brown paid immediate dividends when, in the best move of the game, he beat his man and his pin-point cross was swept home by Morris.

For the last ten minutes, Whaley’s goal led a charmed life as Belper piled on the pressure without reward.

The icing on the cake was a 25-yard super strike from Rob Newton that flew into the net.

Once again, Whaley’s back four were outstanding and Jack Gregory was superb in midfield but, for his goals and non-stop running, striker Morris was named man of the match.

Whaley Bridge will now travel to face South Normanton Athletic in the First Round of the competition this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
