Cheshire League Division One

Whaley Bridge 4, Crewe 0

NEWLY-PROMOTED Whaley Bridge made the perfect start to their first season in the Cheshire Football League Division One with a resounding win over Crewe.

Despite having the better of the game, it took Whaley 30 minutes to take the lead. Matt Brown saw his shot blocked, but new boy Damien Morrison was on hand to slide in the rebound. Whaley were solid at the back and should have added to their lead before half-time but chances went begging.

With Craig Fleury and Damien Morrison controlling midfield, and Matt Brown dangerous on the wing, it was inevitable that more goals would come. On 62 minutes, Whaley doubled their advantage as the lively Lee Morris put Mick Ryan through and he rounded the keeper before firing home.

Ryan added a third goal eight minutes later when he latched on to the ball after Geo Langford’s shot was saved, and on 83 minutes Crewe were caught napping and Brown’s cross from a short corner was headed home by another debutant George Burgess.

Whaley next face a tough challenge when they travel to champions Knutsford on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
