Victory at Wakefield maintains Millers’ unbeaten away form

Evo-Stik First Division North

Wakefield 3, New Mills 5

New Mills remain unbeaten on their travels this season after Tuesday evening’s victory at Wakefield.

Youngster Jordan Armstrong’s pinpoint right-wing cross found striker Steve Moore, who decisively headed past Danny Trueman to open the scoring and register his fifth goal of the season.

Wakefield, searching for their first home win in over a year, equalised with their first significant attack of the game in the 16th minute. Full-back Liam Millen was dispossessed down the left wing and the resulting cross was neatly steered home by David Boardman.

The Millers regained the lead within 90 seconds. Armstrong’s pace was too much for the home defence to handle and he accurately found the back of the net via the base of the upright from the narrowest of angles.

The visitors were forced into a half-time substitution when Leon Grandison came on for Moore, and it took the replacement only 12 minutes to get on the scoresheet when he collected Kristian Cox’s pinpoint through ball and rounded the onrushing goalkeeper with comparative ease.

Wakefield reduced the arrears just after the hour when David Boardman’s deft header found the corner of James Coates’ net.

Cox finally got his goal when the home keeper could only parry Carlos Meakin’s powerful free-kick into his path and the alert striker tapped home the rebound from close range.

Then Grandison’s burst of pace took him clear of the defensive line and he confidently placed an accurate shot past the despairing Danny Trueman.

The Millers allowed Wakefield a glimmer of hope when, in the 73rd minute, a corner kick was diverted in at the near post and was officially credited as an own goal by Michael Bowler.
