Hope Valley League Premier Division: Buxton Town 1, Bradwell 2
BUXTON Town’s title hopes suffered a huge blow as they lost for the second time this season, despite dominating this game from start to finish.
Former Bradwell player Jace Broome was denied what looked a blatant penalty inside five minutes as he slipped the ball past James Taylor who upended the Town midfielder, but the referee waved play on.
Town then had a goal disallowed following a scramble as the keeper seemed to fumble James Mallaband’s effort into the net but the official judged a foul had taken place on the keeper.
Matt Clark and Jack Grindey both went close for Town, but Bradwell, superbly marshalled by Oliver Metcalfe, defended manfully and took the lead in the 39th minute against the run of play. Metcalfe’s free-kick was tipped onto the bar by Ryan Haworth and Neil Maltby was on hand to tap the rebound over the line.
In the 44th minute Bradwell were awarded a penalty when Haworth was penalised for bringing down Martin Riley. From the resulting spot kick, Metcalfe slammed the ball home.
Bradwell defended superbly in the second half as Town tried to force their way back into the game, with Grindey at the heart of the attacks.
Maltby made an excellent last-ditch tackle to deny Andy Jackson and Metcalfe threw his body on the line to block Grindey’s shot.
Town pulled a goal back in the 66th minute when Grindey’s low shot slipped under the keeper.
The home side threw everything at Bradwell, with Richard Mirams’ long throw causing problems, but the visitors stood firm and almost increased their lead when a combination of Haworth and post managed to keep out Metcalfe’s free-kick and Lee Redfern’s follow-up.
Town looked to have rescued a point in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Grindey went clear but his lob over the keeper rebounded off the post.
Buxton: Haworth, Jackson, Moss, Mallaband, Mirams, J Burgess (Young), Broome, G Burgess, Gregory, Grindey, Clark (Greaves). Man of the Match: Jack Grindey.
