Talisman Egerton orchestrates Tidza win

East Midlands Veterans League Section B – Division 3

Tideswell Utd 7, East Leake 0

United were dealt a blow as excellent goalkeeper Paul Cliff was unavailable, so the vintage Les Pountley came out of retirement to don the gloves. Pat Jones, Kenny Yates, Pete Johnson, Simon Milnes and influential captain Mark Heywood were also missing, showing the Sawyeds’ strength in depth as they still hosted a full bench.

Despite attacking with the wind in the first half, it was the visitors who started the better, neatly passing the ball but failing to test Pountley.

United slowly started to create chances. Egerton struck the post after 20 minutes, and five minutes later a well-worked corner kick saw the hosts take the lead.

Wildgoose picked out McNicholas, and from 30 yards the centre half let fly. But it was an instinctive back heel by Paul Boulton which turned the shot into the corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance.

Boulton added his second five minutes before the break when a mistake by the Leake backline allowed him to race clear and calmly steer the ball beyond the onrushing keeper.

Any hopes of a comeback by the visitors were scuppered by a three-goal blast in the opening seven minutes of the second half.

Talisman Paul Egerton hit the first from the tightest of angles after the keeper had saved his initial effort.

Egerton was again involved when his superb run and intelligent pass picked out Dave Bradbury who, from ten yards, powered home the fourth goal

Egerton finished off one of his trademark mazy runs to make it 5-0, and completed his 20-minute hat-trick when he anticipated a weak back pass and finished from a tight angle for a carbon copy of his strike last week.

Dave Crisp fired over from 20 yards out, after being picked out by Wildgoose, before John Dunsby completed the rout when he finished Egerton’s sublime cross.
