Skipper Lugsden salvages point for Hillmen in season opener

North West Counties League Premier Division

Glossop North End 2, Stone Dominoes 2

GLOSSOP left it late to secure a share of the spoils in their opening North West Counties League Premier Division clash against Stone Dominoes on Saturday.

North End made a bright start and, 14 minutes in, midfield man Ash Smallwood found himself free in the box to calmly slot past Cippola in the Stone goal and open the Hillmen’s account.

The lead, however, lasted only minutes. Stone’s first attack of real note led to Dwayne Spence bearing down on the Glossop defence, and he was afforded the space to finish past Ben Proctor.

The sides looked to be heading into half-time level until, on 44 minutes, the impressive Angelo Errico surged down the right-hand side to cross across the penalty box and find the back of Proctor’s net via an outstretched limb.

After the break, the home side pressed for an equaliser, and on 82 minutes were given a glimmer of hope when Dean McGregor was hauled down in full flight approaching the penalty area. Adam Oakes stepped up to take the free-kick, but could only send his left-footed drive over the bar.

The equaliser eventually arrived on the stroke of full-time when onrushing skipper Kelvin Lugsden fired home from close range after ping pong in the away team’s area.

There was still time for late drama as Glossop saw another strong penalty claim waved away, and then Alex Elliott’s ball across the box needed only a touch to steal the points.
