Evo-Stik First Division South
Market Drayton Town 1, New Mills 4
BUOYED by the fillip of the midweek victory over Glossop, New Mills recorded an excellent Evo-Stik League success at Market Drayton Town on Saturday.
The visitors had the ball in the net on the quarter hour, Martin Davies’ effort was ruled out for offside, and shortly after the visitors took the lead.
Antony Field’s cross from the right travelled at least ten yards before striking home defender Andy Hartlebury on the arm inside the area. Ashley Stott kept his composure to send Daimon Stevens the wrong way from the spot kick.
As the half progressed, James Coates wasn’t tested by Shaun Humphreys and Martin Davies who shot over from promising positions but The Millers keeper crucially kept the one-goal lead intact with a stunning reflex save to deny Jamie Haynes with the last kick of the half.
New Mills made a dominant start to the second half, scoring three goals in the opening dozen minutes. Dave Fitzpatrick, who had just seen a brave diving header blocked by Stevens, played an inch perfect cross field ball into the path of Antony Field who collected the ball in his stride and found the bottom corner.
The youngster turned goal-provider three minutes later, linking up well with Leon Grandison, whose strike partner Stott was the ultimate beneficiary as he placed the ball past the onrushing keeper.
Only Mark Stallard’s header off the goal-line denied Field a quick double but three minutes later, the rampant visitors scored a fourth goal. Field again was involved heavily in the build-up and his through ball was seized upon by Grandison who drew the keeper and beat him with ease.
Market Drayton scored a late consolation when substitute Callam Wright took advantage of New Mills’ defence switching off to head a free kick past James Coates.
