Evo-Stik Premier Division: Buxton 2, Northwich Victoria 3

BUXTON FC slipped to an opening day defeat against Northwich Victoria.

Kyle Armstrong netted The Vics’ first goal on 24 minutes. Prior to that, the Bucks’ Kyle Hadley had seen a penalty appeal waved away by the referee after he went to ground in the box.

Defender Tommy Agus’ scrappy goal levelled proceedings eight minutes before the interval, but Northwich hit back through Michael Roddy to lead 2-1 at half time.

Agus saw another chance cleared off the line shortly after the restart, before a fluke header from Dominic Collins made it 3-1 to The Vics with just under half an hour remaining.

Kieran Lugsden headed home a Steve Ridley corner on 82 minutes to give the Bucks hope, and Scott Hartley almost headed an equaliser at the death after going forward for a set-piece.

Buxton assistant manager Clive Freeman said: “I didn’t think we did enough to win the game. We huffed and puffed, but overall we didn’t play well enough.

“We have lost Mark Reed and Gregg Anderson out of the team and haven’t replaced them, but today I thought Tommy (Agus) and Sam (Liversidge) were excellent.

“It’s the first game of the season and we are notoriously slow starters. We’ve got this out of the way now and we are not going to be downbeat. There’s no medals to be won in August. We’ve just got to try and put it right for the trip to Hednesford.”

The Bucks travel to ex-Southern League side Hednesford Town on Tuesday. Kick-off is 7.45pm.

Buxton: Hartley, Black, Ridley, Agus, Liversidge, Maxfield, Pembleton, Towey, Hadley, Lugsden, Parry. Substitutes: S. Johnson, Stevens, Wilde, Taylor, Colley. Attendance: 402.
