FA Vase First Round Proper: Glossop North End 5, Blidworth Welfare 0
GLOSSOP North End bounced back from their midweek defeat to New Mills by thrashing Blidworth Welfare in the FA Vase.
The Hillmen beat Welfare 5-0 to progress to the Second Round Proper of the cup and the possibility of a return trip to Wembley.
The game began slowly for both sides and neither could manufacture any notable chances in the opening stages.
It was Glossop who opened the scoring courtesy of captain Jay Gorton. The faithful Glossop fans would have thought they had swapped a windy Surrey Street for the Camp Nou as Lee McGregor and David Bradburn carved open the Blidworth defence. McGregor slid the ball across the face of the goal and a simple tap-in from Gorton followed.
North End doubled their advantage minutes before the interval. Tricky winger Alex Elliot beat his man and floated the ball across the box to Darren Hamilton, who had a simple header to make it 2-0.
Glossop were comfortable as the second half began and increased their lead shortly after the interval in a fortunate fashion. A mis-queued shot from Bradburn fell kindly for Elliot who side-footed past Paul Stanhope in the Blidworth goal.
After the third goal the away side looked depleted and were slack in their defending. Substitute Sam Hind found himself through on goal and squirted the ball past Stanhope to make it four.
Glossop’s final goal of the game came from substitute Danny Jones. Recently introduced Jones was on the end of a floated cross from Bradburn and headed past Stanhope.
A bad afternoon was capped for Blidworth after a frustrated Thomas Mault was dismissed for seemingly kicking out at Kelvin Lugsden.
The Hillmen now play their third cup game in a row as they travel to Eccleshall for the North West Counties Football League Cup on Saturday.
