Young Stevens will be 'vital cog' in midfield
POPULAR young midfielder Neil Stevens will be playing in Buxton FC colours next season, the club has confirmed.
Arriving at the Silverlands on loan from Blue Square North outfit Farsley Celtic last November, Stevens (20) made an immediate impact and has scored four goals in his last 33 appearances
At the end of the season, he decided to return to Farsley in an attempt to earn a starting place, but has now been persuaded by the Buxton management duo of John Reed and Clive Freeman to change his mind and commit himself to the Derbyshire Senior Cup holders.
Chairman Tony Tomlinson said: "This is great news for the club and I'm sure everyone will be delighted. Neil had an excellent first season and he is the type of young player we need – talented, committed and of good character.
"He likes it here and he will be a vital cog in centre midfield alongside skipper Michael Towey."
Buxton fans have also been greeted by the news of striker Paul Walker's decision to return for pre-season training with the Bucks.
Last season, 'Wakka' was plagued by a condition which robbed him of energy, but although extensive medical tests have failed to find a cause, the player is hopeful of resuming his career for a fourth campaign at the Silverlands.
With the likely departure of former contract players Terry Bowker, Steve Brodie and James Turley, new men will be drafted in and several likely candidates will be attending training in readiness for the first friendly fixture on Thursday July 9 (kick-off 7.45pm), when Championship side Barnsley will be sending a full-strength team to the Silverlands.
Ex-Buxton player Jon Froggatt (released from Boston United), centre half James Riordan (Ossett Town) and former Sheffield Wednesday defender Sam Liversidge could all feature in pre-season training for the Bucks.
Liversidge enjoyed a loan spell at the Silverlands last season, making nine appearances.
