Title chase hots up as leaders drop points

EASTWOOD Town maintained their unbeaten home record and still head the Premier Division, but two 1-1 draws in the week, one at home to next to bottom Prescot Cables on Tuesday and Whitby Town on Saturday, meant they dropped four points.

This enabled Nantwich Town to close to within two points after their 4-0 win over North Ferriby United, who drop out of the play-off positions as a result.

Two defeats in the week for third place Hednesford Town continued their miserable run and Ilkeston Town, who beat them on Tuesday before following up with a win at the weekend against bottom club Leigh Genesis, closed to within two points of the "Pitmen".

Bradford Park Avenue slipped up last Monday at Ashton United but moved back into the play-off zone when they became the latest club to beat Hednesford on Saturday.

FC United of Manchester stayed in the hunt for a play-off spot, but had to come from behind in the 1-1 draw at Gigg Lane against a spirited Buxton side.

Boston United are in big trouble as their goal drought - two in 11 league games - continued with a home defeat to fellow strugglers Matlock Town and are now third bottom.

First Division North leaders Durham City also dropped four points with two draws, but it could have been worse as they trailed Trafford 3-1 at the interval on Saturday.

However all around them dropped points as well with none of the top seven claiming maximums.

Skelmersdale United particularly suffered with just one point from two games after they lost to Wakefield.

Eighth and ninth placed Nwcastle Blue Star and Curzon Ashton both enjoyed maximums whilst lowly Rossendale United also had a good week ending a nine game run without a victory holding Durham City to a draw and then winning at Garforth Town after being two down.

It was a bad week for Belper Town in the First Division South with last week's second place team losing twice to stoppage time goals.

Saturday's defeat saw them relinquish their unbeaten home record with their conquerors Lincoln United maintaining their unbeaten away record.

Leaders Retford United made no mistake with a 4-0 win at Gresley Rovers and Stocksbridge move into second after bagging six points in the week.
