Shock defeats for Hednesford and FC United

EASTWOOD Town enhanced their chances of the title without kicking a ball when nearest rivals Hednesford Town surprisingly crashed 4-1 at Kendal Town, who had won only one of their last eight league outings.

Nantwich Town consolidated third spot with a solitary goal at Cammell Laird whilst Ilkeston Town moved back in to the play-off spots despite being held to a draw at relegation threatened Matlock Town.

They took the place of FC United who slumped to a shock home defeat at the hands of Leigh Genesis for whom Phil Marsh bagged a hat-trick including two penalties.

Genesis had taken only two points from their previous nine games but lifted themselves off bottom rung with this win to be replaced by Prescot Cables who were among one of the four top tier games to fall victim to the weather.

Two other strugglers to pick up points were Whitby Town, although they will have been disappointed to let slip a 3-1 lead at Ashton United, and Witton Albion who climbed out of the relegation slots with a 4-1 win at home to Buxton - but there are only five points separating the bottom nine clubs.

Retford United have gone ten points clear at the top of the First Division South after winning 2-1 at Leek Town, while Belper Town made it six straight wins with a 4-0 success over Gresley Rovers.

Losing ground on the top two were Carlton Town, who lost at home to Lincoln United as the latter maintained their unbeaten away record, and Stamford who were held to a goalless draw at Loughborough Dynamo.

At the opposite end, next to bottom Kidsgrove Athletic ended a nine match losing streak with a vital 5-2 victory over bottom club Brigg Town.

First Division North leaders FC Halifax Town were held at Warrington Town and their lead is down to three points over Durham City who won narrowly at bottom side Salford City to keep their unbeaten start to life in the UniBond League going.

Skelmersdale United kept their tremendous run going with a 3-2 win at Rossendale United who are now five games without a point, while Colwyn Bay are another in form team as their win over Wakefield was their ninth in 11 games.

Fourth place Bamber Bridge were demolished 5-0 at home to Clitheroe and fifth place Lancaster City also lost at Woodley Sports.

The two other games to survive saw 4-1 wins for Chorley and Curzon Ashton, with the former putting a nice run together after a slow start to the season.
